Will an iPhone 17 Pro Max Fit an iPhone 18 Pro Max Case?

Yes, an iPhone 17 Pro Max can fit many cases made for the iPhone 18 Pro Max. The phones share the same published body dimensions, and case makers including OtterBox have confirmed that their newer Pro Max cases work with the older model. The camera opening and controls still need to line up on the specific case.

Width78.0 mm78.0 mm
Depth8.75 mm8.75 mm

Apple lists the newer phone’s measurements in its iPhone 18 Pro Max technical specifications. Macworld’s comparison gives the same figures for the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Those measurements explain why the older phone can seat inside a case molded for the newer body. They do not include the full thickness of the raised camera section.

What Changes Around the Camera?

The camera plateau is the raised section across the upper back of the phone. Its shape matters because a closely molded case can grip that area as well as the phone’s sides.

John Gruber measured the regular iPhone 18 Pro and 17 Pro at 11.5 mm and 11.4 mm respectively at the camera plateau. He reported that Apple does not officially call the generations case-compatible because the newer plateau is thicker. He also fitted Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro review cases onto iPhone 17 Pro phones. That hands-on result concerns the regular Pro models, rather than a direct test of the two Pro Max phones.

For the Pro Max pair, several case makers have confirmed compatibility in that direction. Macworld reported that OtterBox confirmed compatibility between its iPhone 18 Pro Max cases and the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Decoded also confirmed support for older models, while Rokform said its newer Pro cases fit both generations. Rokform cautioned that its older 17 Pro cases do not fit the newer phones, so that confirmation should not be read in reverse.

How to Check an iPhone 18 Pro Max Case on Your 17 Pro Max

  • Seat every corner. All four should fit fully without an edge lifting away.
  • Inspect the camera area. The case should leave the lenses, flash and sensors uncovered, with no rigid part pressing against them. If it has a camera cover, open and close it to check for contact.
  • Check the camera guard. From the side, compare the highest lens ring with the surrounding case edge. A seated phone does not automatically mean the guard rises above the lenses.
  • Test the controls. The Side button, volume buttons, Action button and Camera Control should respond normally without any control being held down.
  • Check the bottom and front rim. The USB-C port, speakers and microphones should align with their openings. The front rim should sit evenly and should not lift an installed screen protector.

If a corner will not seat or a rigid part presses on the camera hardware, that particular case does not fit correctly.

Should You Use One?

If you already own an iPhone 18 Pro Max case that passes those checks, the different model name alone is no reason to replace it. If you are buying a new case for the older phone, a design that explicitly lists the iPhone 17 Pro Max gives you a confirmed model match.
